Coming To America

Text Size

To spearhead its EfficientDynamics strategy, BMW has introduced a new high-performance diesel engine and will be bringing it to the United States in two vehicles, the 335d and X5 xDrive35d. The power unit is a 3.0-liter inline six cylinder with Variable Twin Turbo Technology. It develops a lusty 425 lb-ft of torque at 1750 rpm and a maximum of 265 hp at the top of the rev range. Better yet, it meets stringent emissions control measures in all 50 states.

The 335d supposedly runs to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds and offers fuel economy of 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. The diesel X5 takes nine-tenths of a second longer to reach 62 and turns out claimed economy figures of 19 mpg city and 25 mpg on the open road. Release of both vehicles is planned for fall '08, with pricing announced nearer the time.
