In theory, tuning is a simple concept: taking the power level the factory gave you and increasing it to where you want to be. In practice, it's easier said than done. Luckily, the outfits listed throughout the following pages have already performed a lot of the work. Whether you drive a Golf, a Benz or an F430, we've compiled a list of readily available power upgrades that can push you closer to that ultimate power goal. The list is by no means comprehensive--that would be near impossible--but it is extensive. We've tried to include just about every popular (and some not so) application we could think of, drawing from a well of some of our favorite aftermarket tuners. Please keep in mind all power gains are claimed by the individual manufacturers and have not been independently verified by this publication. We've included ballpark pricing figures, but also make sure you double-check with the source. So happy hunting--and try to keep it under 100, you maniac.
*Audi/Volkswagen 1.8T (All models)
Many engine software upgrade options are available and produce on average 35 to 40 peak hp with torque gains of 70 to 80 lb-ft. Some are just engine software upgrades while others offer hand-held tuning devices to switch between stock and modified. Some companies allow the user to select multi-octane programs for increased performance when using higher octane gasoline. Check out APR, GIAC, Neuspeed and Revo Technik. $399-$499
*Audi A4 1.8T (B5, 1997-2001)
A K04 turbo upgrade can produce 225 to 245 hp, depending on octane and if additional modifications are installed. These kits normally consist of the K04 turbo, 5.0 bar fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs and gaskets. Sources include AWE Tuning and Neuspeed. From $1,699
If larger horsepower numbers are required, ATP Turbo offers a direct bolt-on Garrett turbocharger. The kit has the capacity to produce 250 to 350 hp, depending on additional modifications. $1,299-$3,999
*Audi A4 1.8T (B6, 2002-05)
Adding a properly designed front-mount intercooler is always beneficial when increasing boost, if low octane fuel is used, or if you live in an area that experiences extremely hot ambient temperatures. Gains up to 20 hp have been reported. Check out APR and AWE Tuning. $999-$1,049
Another option for reducing intake temperatures can come from an OEM source. In Europe, Audi equips the A4 with a dual intercooler setup from the factory. Since these parts are designed as original equipment, the fit is perfect on US models with zero modifications needed for installation. Another great bonus: for cars with an aftermarket front bumper cover, no modification is necessary when installing the dual intercooler kit. Along with reduced intake temperatures, gains of up to 20 hp can be realized. Contact Greedspeed. $899
The K04-15 turbo upgrade has been a popular upgrade for the 1.8T engine since its debut in 1997, and it holds true for the second generation (B6). The Neuspeed K04 kit comes complete with turbocharger, TT-sourced injectors, spark plugs and gaskets necessary for the upgrade. This is intended to produce peak power in the 240 to 270 hp range, depending on additional modifications. $1999
For the truly power-hungry, APR has a Stage III upgrade kit that includes a Garrett Ballistic Series turbocharger, custom Inconel exhaust manifold, a larger MAF sensor and injectors and a high-flow catalyst. With the addition of a cat-back exhaust and a front-mount intercooler (sold separately) the kit produces a claimed total 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. $5,299
*Audi TT 1.8T
For the 225-bhp TT, APR carries a Stage III upgrade that attains a claimed 383 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel on 93 octane gas, when paired with a front-mount intercooler and cat-back exhaust (sold separately). The kit combines stock-like driveability with OE-like fit and finish. $6,899
*Volkswagen Jetta, Golf, Beetle 1.8T (1999-2005)
For more power than a simple K04 turbo upgrade offers, ATP has an Eliminator Transverse FWD turbo upgrade program. The buyer can choose from three direct bolt-on turbochargers with the ability to produce 290 to 400 bhp, depending on your level of sanity. Parts are sold in component form, allowing the user to customize his (or her) installation. From $1,295
Alternatively, put an end to parts-hunting with APR's Stage III or Stage III+ power kits, which are shipped with everything needed for a comprehensive turbo upgrade in one box. Stage III brings up the horsepower to a claimed 290 hp and increases torque to 296 lb-ft, while Stage III+ brings power levels to a claimed 340 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. From $4,499
*Volkswagen Passat 1.8T (B5/B5.5, 1998-2005)
For this application, a K04 upgrade (Neuspeed, AWE) can produce 225 to 245 hp, depending on the quality of fuel used, and, of course, whether additional upgrades are present. These kits normally consist of a K04 turbo, 5.0 bar fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs and gaskets. If your car is from 2001.5 or a later year, the kit should include a set of uprated fuel injectors. $1,699-$1,999
