On paper, the car doesn't appear to offer much grunt. A 3.6-liter V6 seems a little small for a vehicle of this mass, yet it feels quick on the road. The Haldex all-wheel drive system is essentially the same as that found in the R32 and A3 and works equally well in this platform. With this engine's twist, I imagine a front-drive version would be a torque-steering monster. This system is well worth the extra weight for that reason.
With options, our Passat is nearly $45,000-rather steep for a car with a base price in the low 30s. But, instead of seeing this as a good-but-overpriced vehicle, it makes me realize what a great deal the lower-priced Passats are. This is roughly equal in size to a 5 Series or E-Class. Next to those, comparing features per dollar, the Passat is a steal. It doesn't have the same status, but, for driving enjoyment, it's right on the money.
