*Volvo launches its 2008 model year with revisions of four models-complete overhauls of both the V70 and XC70, along with facelifts and styling enhancements for the S40 and V50.

The latter two get a new front fascia with redesigned headlights and a larger Volvo Ironmark, along with a new color-coordinated rear bumper, trunk or tailgate garnish, and new taillights. Interiors have been revamped to improve convenience, with expanded storage space in the center console and doors, improved air vents, a standard auxiliary input with MP3 capability, standard tire pressure monitoring and a redesigned instrument cluster. The range-topping T5 engine sees an increase in horsepower, from 218 to 227, while the six-speed manual transmission has been dropped from all-wheel-drive models and replaced with a standard five-speed Geartronic automatic.

The '08 V70 and XC70 are all-new. Space in the rear quarters has increased and families with young children will now have access to a height-adjustable booster cushion to optimize seatbelt geometry, regardless of a child's height. Safety is further enhanced with extended inflatable curtains and a new, stronger side structure, incorporating high-tensile steel of varying grades interacting to minimize penetration in the event of a collision.

Other safety features include second-generation WHIPS, the head-restraint whiplash protection system, optional active bi-xenon headlamps, optional Adaptive Cruise Control (which monitors the distance between the car and vehicles in front), and the Blind Spot Information System to inform the driver when another vehicle is in a blind spot offset to the rear.

Both cars now come with a six-cylinder engine, a naturally aspirated 3.2-liter in-line unit putting out a maximum of 235 hp. It is arranged transversely, according to Volvo's vision of front-end collision safety, effectively becoming yet another layer in the car's collapsible front crumple zones. This engine is mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed Geartronic automatic with Sport mode for manual shifting during spirited driving.

Of course, the XC70 features the latest version of Volvo's all-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled hydraulic clutch distributing drive between the front and rear wheels to improve grip in all driving situations. A new Instant Traction feature shifts drive force from the front wheels to the rear when launching on loose or slippery surfaces. Hill Descent Control is a standard function the driver can engage through a button on the instrument panel. It uses the car's brakes and engine torque to allow a slow, controlled crawl down steep inclines, and can be disengaged by pressing the brakes, accelerating or manually shifting gears.

Both cars also feature premium audio systems with available Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound, Dynaudio speakers and subwoofers. Six speakers are standard, which can be expanded to eight in the High Performance package and 12 in the Premium. Along with increased legroom, ergonomic seats with optional heating and ventilation, and the brand's signature convenience and functionality, there are definitely worse places to be than in the cockpit of a 2008 Volvo.
