2007 BMW 335I Software And Intake Upgrades - Proven

Afe Intake Part

Features
* Stock/valet, stock boost levels of 6-8 psi
* Low boost map, boost levels of 11-12 psi
* High-altitude map, boost levels of 13-14 psi, but more aggressive high-rpm boost taper
* High boost map, boost levels of 13-14 psi, auto detects and adapts to modifications like race gas, intake, exhaust, downpipe, etc.
* High boost map with lagfix, same as map 3 but with improved throttle response below 3500 rpm
* Hot map, same as map 3 but with more aggressive low end boost and less high end taper
* Hot map with lagfix, same as map 5 but with improved throttle response below 3500 rpm
* Race map, 97+ RM/2 octane and supporting modifications suggested, peak boost of 14-16 psi depending on modifications and weather conditions
* Compatibly with latest 29.2/v81 factory engine control unit

Parts: Plug and Play engine control unit harness, JB3 control box
Options: Stage 3 hardwire map switch, allows user to disable gas pedal switching and lock into map 0 or 3; stage 3 USB Chip Burner, allows updating of the JB3 control box via a home PC; BMS V2 downpipe fix, eliminates the check engine light caused by downpipes with no catalytic converter (off-road use only)
Installation time: 90 minutes
Tools needed: 8 mm socket, small flat screw driver
Price: BMS Juice Box Stage 3 PnP, $579; Stage 3 hardwire map switch, $22; Stage 3 USB Chip Burner, $50; BMS V2 downpipe fix, $65

Pros
* Free with purchase of BMS Juice Box Stage 3--more power at zero cost
* Increased boost did not cause a check-engine light or activate limp mode

Cons
* Map 3 throttle response was not as smooth as the response in Map 1

Notes
With the Juice Box still set to MAP 3, we installed the intake. The first dyno run showed better than expected results. We saw the peak wheel-horsepower hit 290, but the excitement was short lived as we were not able duplicate the numbers gain unless we reset the ECU. So these "Hail Mary" runs would only happen once after the ECU reset--and by the second run the ECU already seemed to adapt.

Performance
Peak power: 286hp @ 5721 rpm
Peak torque: 283 lb-ft @ 3369 rpm
Max power gain: 3 hp @ 5721 rpm
Max torque gain: 8 lb-ft @ 3369 rpm
Max torque loss: 13 lb-ft @ 2899 rpm

Features
Parts: Twin air filters, heat shield, weather strip, edge guard, Y-shaped plastic molded tube, mounting bolt and washers
Options: AFE Dynamic air scoops, AFE Pro-Dry S synthetic media air filters
Installation time: 30-45 minutes
Tools needed: Regular and a stubby flat screw driver, 6mm socket/nut driver, WD40 spray lube
Price: AFE stage 2 intake w/Pro-5R filters: $498.75; AFE stage 2 intake w/Pro-Dry S filters: $493.75; AFE Dynamic Air Scoops; $186.25

Pros
* 18-gauge powder coated heat shield utilizes the same three mounting points and rubber bushings as the lower half of the stock airbox, and is designed to block engine heat
* Reusable Pro-5R air filter utilizes 5 layers of progressive cotton
* Use of plastic molding in the construction of Y-pipe allows for precise fitment, less heat transfer from the engine bay into the intake system, and smooth internal surface for optimal air flow
* Heat shield has a provision to retain the factory cold air duct from the front grille
* Increased throttle response and a great sound
* Motor seems to struggle less in the higher rpm range
* The Y-pipe incorporates a internal crossover to equalize pressure between both side of the intake

Cons
* The stock airbox helps support three wire bundles that cross over the engine and a vacuum tube mounted on the front; the intake eliminates these supports and the instructions offer no resolution
* Low end torque loss
